A woman – so young and ripe – lies amid a detritus of pine needles and dirt. Her hair is matted to her face with a mixture of blood and tears and she screams again before subsiding into body wrenching sobs. Her voice is slightly slurred as she begs, “Please, stop. Please, I want to go home. Please don’t do it again.” A pair of black gloved hands comes into view. They hold pliers. The girl screams again. Lovely.
Successful artist Caleb Everett lives each day with a real-time film inside his head, playing … murder. Since he was a child, Caleb has been able to see into the minds of killers. Working alongside veteran Homicide Detective Jack Rafferty, Caleb now uses his unique ability to balance the scales of justice.
With a new case afoot, Caleb is himself being targeted by a killer, and with attractive journalist Makayla Dawson on the scene, it becomes a race against time to save them all. With the odds savagely stacked against them, will this case take apart everything Caleb holds dear?
Review by Lou
This book was a bit of a switch in genre for me. I love a good crime/thriller, but haven’t read one in so long! When I was asked to read this, I read the blurb and it immediately sounded like the kind of book I would enjoy and this debut novel from this author did not disappoint. I was totally engrossed in this story line and simply wanted to see where it would lead me next. I could not put it down! I will definitely be following TJ Spade’s future writing.
This book follows Caleb Everett. We learn right from the start an insight into his childhood, then we are taken to a snippet when he is in his late teens, then we jump forward again to present day. All these points link together and we learn a lot about Caleb’s ‘abilities’, and how he is now successfully assisting the police in their search for murderers in homicide cases. Caleb has a pretty unique ability, which has proved very useful, but from Caleb’s point of view also quite distressing. This becomes more apparent when the victims are closer to home and things become a but more personal.
Jack works within the police department, and him and Caleb have been friends for many years ever since their first encounter. I loved their friendship; they have obviously developed a pretty strong bond over the years, building a lot of trust, where Jack is almost a father figure to Caleb. I also really enjoyed all of the other secondary characters. Caleb’s relationship with his best friend Ethan and his family was wonderful…. and of course when Makayla turns up on the scene, she turns his world upside down. But can Caleb control his ‘talents’ and get further inside his own mind and the minds of others before those he loves the most are hurt… or worse?! I loved the scenes between Caleb and Mak, there was a lot of sweetness and tenderness there! I hope in the future books, we see their relationship develop.
My only slight feeling was that I felt the ending was slightly rushed. Had this been a complete standalone I would think it had ended quite abruptly, but knowing that there is another book in the series was enough for me not to worry about this too much!
An fantastic book, full of twists, turns, drama, suspense, scary moments, happy moments, and also some rather descriptive gruesome moments! I was biting my nails with my heart racing throughout. I simply couldn’t guess what was going to happen & although I had my suspicions about certain characters, even then, there were still further surprises along the way!
Really looking forward to the next book in this new series – a new TJ Spade fan right here!!
